If you are looking for a Character.AI alternative, start with the kind of conversation you want to keep having. Browsing characters, shaping a particular companion, and playing through a story with a whole cast are different ways to spend an evening.

JanitorAI, Kindroid, Nomi, and fiabai offer different combinations of those activities. Their free access also works differently: unlimited standard-model chats, a daily message allowance, a one-time preview, or points spent on generation.

This comparison is for adult readers. JanitorAI, Kindroid, and Nomi have adult-only access rules; check each service's current age and regional requirements before signing up.

Choose by the kind of chat you want

What you want to do A service to consider Why it belongs on your shortlist
Browse public characters or write your own bot JanitorAI Public character chats, with separate personality, scenario, and opening-message settings for creators
Shape a character's personality, reply style, and important memories Kindroid Separate fields for personality, response instructions, example messages, and key memories
Keep talking with a companion and build a shared background Nomi Backstory+ for identity, relationship context, communication preferences, and the current roleplay
Play a scenario or a chapter-based story with several characters fiabai Character and scenario creation, plus stories with a narrator, cast, chapters, and world information

These are reasons to consider each service, not a ranking of writing quality or memory accuracy. Nomi can also be used for fantasy roleplay, Kindroid has group chats, and fiabai supports free talk with a character. Choose the starting point that fits what you want to do, rather than treating these as exclusive categories.

Two imagined ways to play: a quiet cafe conversation between two adults, and three adult fantasy travellers planning an adventure.

One-to-one conversation and an ensemble story. AI-generated illustration of fictional adults, not screenshots or sample outputs from the compared services.

Free access and ongoing costs

The word free does not describe the same offer on all four services.

Service What you can try without an ongoing paid plan What changes when you pay
JanitorAI The subscription FAQ lists unlimited chats with standard models in the free tier Janitor+ adds features including a larger context window and priority access. The optional Router has separate usage charges
Kindroid A one-time new-account preview: 50 messages, or 15 in some regions A trial or subscription lets you keep chatting after the preview. Higher memory tiers are separate add-ons
Nomi An indefinite free plan with 50 messages per day, according to Nomipedia Paid features include group chats, voice messaging, and calls; message-length allowances also differ
fiabai Free Monochrome Ink is available through sources such as sign-up and daily check-in; generated replies spend Ink Purchased Color Ink adds to your balance. The response model and reasoning settings affect the amount spent per reply

Free access differs: JanitorAI offers unlimited standard-model chats; Nomi has a daily allowance; Kindroid has a one-time preview; fiabai spends Ink on generated replies.

JanitorAI: standard chats and Router are different offers

You do not need to treat an external model setup as the default way to begin. The free tier includes standard chat models. Janitor+ is a paid subscription, while janitor+ Router is an optional way for subscribers to use third-party models on the web.

Router usage is billed per token at the displayed rate, in addition to the subscription. Paying for Janitor+ does not make every Router model unlimited or free.

Kindroid: a preview is not a renewable daily allowance

Kindroid's current subscription guide describes a one-time preview, not unlimited free messaging. Once the preview is used up, the account becomes read-only unless you start a trial or subscription. You can still view and export data in read-only mode.

The three-day premium trial requires a payment method and converts to a subscription unless cancelled in time. Web trials require phone verification and are not offered in every region. Starting a trial or subscription permanently ends the new-account preview.

Check the checkout price for your country and purchase platform. Ultra and MAX are separate monthly add-ons with dependencies on the lower tiers, so compare the total recurring bill rather than one add-on's price.

Nomi: daily messages and input length both matter

Nomi's free plan gives you room to return on another day rather than using one lifetime preview. There is also a limit on how much you can send at once: the message-length guide lists 400 characters per user message for free accounts and 800 for paid accounts. Those are input limits, not the length of a Nomi's reply.

If you want group scenes or voice features, check the paid offer before planning around them. Nomi's downgrade policy distinguishes one-to-one chatting from paid features that become read-only after moving to the free tier.

fiabai: check the Ink cost of your chosen settings

fiabai uses points called Ink. Its Ink guide separates free Monochrome Ink from purchased Color Ink; free Ink is spent first.

Generating a reply starts at 1 Ink, with extra costs for some models and reasoning settings. Regenerating or asking the AI to continue also consumes Ink. Creating a character or story is separate from paying for generated replies or images.

Look at the total Ink per message shown in the chat settings, not just the balance or the size of a pack. Purchased Color Ink expires 180 days after purchase. A free grant or check-in reward is not a promise of unlimited free conversation.

Character setup and memory

JanitorAI: the public bio is not the character's instructions

If you make your own bot, distinguish the description that attracts readers from the settings used during a chat. JanitorAI's creation guide says Character Bio is for people browsing the character; Personality holds information used by the bot. Scenario gives the situation, while Initial Message sets up the opening.

For a long-running scene, the Chat Memory guide recommends keeping the current situation, relationship, and important past events concise. A large amount of pasted history can use up space needed for the ongoing conversation.

Kindroid: separate who they are from how they reply

Kindroid's customization guide places the former Backstory field under Personality. Use it for the character's background and identity, Response Directive for concise guidance, Example Message for tone and format, and Key Memories for facts you want to reinforce.

This separation is useful if a character's identity is right but their replies are too long, too formal, or written from the wrong perspective. You can work on the relevant instruction or example instead of rewriting the whole background. It does not guarantee that every detail will be recalled correctly.

Nomi: background and the current scene have different homes

Backstory+ includes Backstory, Inclination, Current Roleplay, preferences, and boundaries, among other sections. That gives you places to distinguish an established relationship from what is happening right now.

Nomi's Backstory explanation also says those notes do not completely define personality or behavior. Keep the notes consistent with the conversation, and revise them when the circumstances change rather than assuming one setup will control every future reply.

fiabai: build a scene or a cast, not only a profile

fiabai's character guide separates a character's core identity from the events and relationship placed in a scenario. If you want a particular meeting or situation, that distinction helps you decide what belongs where.

Its story mode brings several characters into a chapter-based world. A narrator writes the scene and the cast's lines, with chapter summaries carrying events forward. That is a different reading experience from receiving one character's reply at a time.

The public guides are available in English through the language menu. That does not establish how every public story or selected model will read in English; try the language and style you intend to use before buying more Ink.

What you can bring from Character.AI

Keeping an archive is different from continuing the same chat in another app. Start with the Character.AI export guide if you still need a private copy of conversations you want to keep.

For a new character setup, prepare a smaller set of material you are entitled to use:

  • The character's identity, background, and traits you want to preserve.
  • Your persona and the relationship you want to establish.
  • A checked summary of important events and the scene you want to resume.
  • A few dialogue examples you wrote or have permission to reuse.

Keep a private Character.AI archive separately from a new character setup using background, persona, a checked event summary, and dialogue examples you may reuse. An export is not a direct transfer.

Explanatory diagram, not a screenshot or an import workflow. It separates the Character.AI export process from preparing new settings, as described in Nomi's migration guide.

A public character's introduction is not necessarily their full definition. Do not assume you can retrieve a creator's hidden settings, or that a character with the same name in another app is the same creation.

Nomi's migration guide explicitly says there is no direct transfer of an AI; it describes using information to help recreate identity and shared history. That is a useful distinction when evaluating any migration claim.

Kindroid separately documents an account data export. The ability to export your new account's data is worth checking, but it does not prove that a Character.AI archive can be imported into it. Before uploading an archive anywhere, confirm the supported source, file format, and what the receiving app will actually save.

Keep the original archive private. There is no need to hand a whole conversation history to an unknown converter just to write a short character profile.

Try a small scene before paying

Use a scene you know well enough to judge. Give the character a short background, one important fact, and a clear starting situation, then continue for a few exchanges.

Check the parts that will affect whether you enjoy using the service:

  • Does it use English in the tone and length you want?
  • Does it leave your persona's decisions to you?
  • Can you correct a mistaken detail without restarting the whole setup?
  • Do you prefer a character replying directly, or a narrator writing the wider scene?
  • Can you see how the next reply, regeneration, or model change affects your allowance or bill?

A short scene will not establish long-term memory performance, but it can show whether the basic writing format and controls suit you. Start with that fit. Expand the setup, cast, or paid features only when you know what you want them to add.
