JanitorAI has a free option, and you do not need to buy an external API key to use its built-in JLLM. Janitor+ is an optional subscription. Janitor Router is a separate way for subscribers to use third-party models, with usage charges on top of the subscription.

For a first conversation, start with the free built-in model. Paying or connecting a provider makes more sense once you can name what you want to change: the amount of conversation the model can use, access to a particular model, or another paid feature.

What is free, and what costs extra?

The official subscription FAQ lists unlimited chats, standard chat models, and around 9,000 tokens of context for free users. It also says the free option will remain available.

The confusing part is that a subscription, Router usage, and an external provider account are different purchases.

Option What you are paying for Do you supply a provider API key?
Free built-in models / JLLM No subscription required for standard chat No
Janitor+ Optional subscription benefits, including more context No, for built-in models
Janitor Router Janitor+ subscription plus per-token model usage No; Router handles the connection
External proxy / provider The external service's own access and usage terms Depends on the provider and setup

Four cost categories: free standard chat, optional Janitor+ subscription, Router subscription plus token usage, and external provider terms.

Free chats do not mean unlimited memory

JLLM means Janitor's own large language model. The official terminology guide describes it as the default model used unless you connect an external API.

A context window is the amount of text a model can work with at once. It has to accommodate the character setup and conversation material, rather than being a promise that every earlier message will always be remembered. Tokens are units of text; they are not the same thing as messages.

That is why the free plan can offer unlimited chats while still having a context limit. A long-running story can outgrow what the model sees in a single reply. Buying more context increases that capacity; it does not guarantee perfect recall or a particular writing style.

What does Janitor+ add?

The subscription FAQ advertises five times more context, priority replies, and a monthly allowance of swipes on its best models, alongside profile and reaction features. Those are the service's stated benefits, not a guarantee that you will prefer every paid reply.

If your main reason for considering Janitor+ is a longer ongoing roleplay, the context increase is the relevant feature to examine. If you only want to try a character and see whether the style suits you, the free option lets you do that without first choosing an external provider.

The FAQ does not give a fixed subscription price. Check the current price, renewal period, and cancellation terms in the billing flow for the platform where you subscribe. Do not assume a price from an old guide still applies.

Janitor+ also should not be read as an all-inclusive pass for every model available through JanitorAI. Router has its own usage costs.

Janitor Router adds a separate usage bill

According to the official Router guide, Router is available to Janitor+ subscribers on the web. Mobile support is described as planned, not as a current feature.

Router connects third-party models inside JanitorAI without requiring you to set up an external proxy or paste your own provider API key. You fund a built-in wallet, and model use is billed per token. The guide says there is no extra Router fee beyond the subscription and token usage.

Router usage is additional to Janitor+. Check the selected model's rates and context limit before funding the wallet. A monthly subscription price alone does not tell you the total cost of using Router.

The guide also says Router does not replace JLLM+ and that existing external proxies can still be used. You do not have to treat Router as a required migration from the built-in models.

Do you need an API key?

For free built-in JLLM, no. For Router, you do not bring your own provider key either, although you do need its subscription and wallet access.

An external proxy is different: it connects JanitorAI to a model service outside the built-in route. That service determines its own credentials, supported models, limits, and charges. A tutorial that asks you to obtain a key may be describing this optional route rather than a requirement for all JanitorAI chats.

Built-in models need no external provider key; Router manages its own connection; an external proxy uses provider-specific access details.

Connection overview, not settings instructions. External providers do not all use the same setup.

An API key is an access credential, not a voucher that makes a model free. A provider may offer an allowance, charge for usage, require a prepaid balance, or apply other conditions. Check that provider's current terms rather than borrowing a free-message count from an old tutorial.

Keep credentials out of character descriptions, chat messages, shared screenshots, and public posts. Use only the configuration method documented by the provider you intend to trust. If you do not specifically want an external model, there is no need to collect a key just to begin.

Check eligibility before choosing a paid option

JanitorAI is for adults. Its minor-related content policy prohibits users under 18 and under-18 personas. Choosing a free model does not remove that requirement.

The age-verification guide also describes a one-time check for users connecting from Australia, Brazil, and the UK, handled through k-ID. Age verification and a paid subscription are separate requirements; buying a plan is not a substitute for meeting the age rules.

Before starting, confirm adult eligibility, the selected model connection, who bills you, and whether usage charges are additional.

A pre-chat checklist, not an account or payment screen.

Before entering payment details, answer these questions:

  • Am I eligible to use the service? Follow its adult-only and applicable verification requirements.
  • Which model connection am I choosing? Built-in JLLM, Router, and an external proxy are not interchangeable billing arrangements.
  • Who will charge me? Identify the subscription seller and, if relevant, the external provider or Router wallet.
  • What can cost more as I chat? Check token rates, balances, allowances, and renewal terms separately.

If you are still deciding whether JanitorAI fits the kind of roleplay you want, compare it with the other options in our Character.AI alternatives guide. If you have already chosen a new app and want to rebuild your own character, the character recreation guide separates the character setup from the history you bring with it.
