Nomi and Kindroid both let you build an AI companion for ongoing conversations. The useful differences are what you can try for free, which character details you can edit later, and how you can correct information as a conversation grows.
This comparison focuses on one-to-one chats and the controls described in the official guides. Nomi is for people aged 18 or older; Kindroid requires you to be at least 18 and to meet the age of majority where you live. See the Nomi terms and Kindroid terms before signing up.

Free access and trial limits
Both services mention 50 messages, but those allowances cover different periods.
| Service | Free access | What happens when you use the allowance |
|---|---|---|
| Nomi | An indefinite free plan with 50 messages per day | The allowance is daily, rather than one lifetime preview. Paid features have separate conditions |
| Kindroid | A one-time new-account preview of 50 messages, or 15 in some regions | The account becomes read-only unless you start a trial or subscription |
These conditions come from Nomi's free-plan FAQ and Kindroid's subscription guide.
Explanatory diagram, not a screenshot. A daily allowance and a one-time preview are different offers.
Kindroid's separate three-day premium trial requires a payment method and automatically converts to a subscription unless cancelled within the trial period. Web trials require phone verification and are not available in every region. Starting a trial or subscription permanently ends the new-account preview; cancelling later does not restore it.
Nomi also limits the length of what you send: 400 characters per message on the free plan and 800 on a paid plan. Those are user-input limits, not the length of the AI's reply or a measure of memory capacity.
Check the current price for your country and purchase platform before paying. A daily allowance, a trial, and a recurring subscription should not be compared as if they were the same free plan.
Character settings you can change later
Nomi: starting traits and later context
Nomi's settings FAQ says the name, initial personality traits, and starting interests cannot currently be changed directly after creation. Choose those with some care.
That does not mean the character is frozen. Conversations and Backstory+ can reinforce personality details and add context. Backstory holds core background, Inclination guides expression, and Current Roleplay describes the present situation. Adding those notes is different from editing the original starting fields.
For a substantially different starting personality or set of interests, the official FAQ suggests creating another Nomi.
Kindroid: editable fields and the opening greeting
Kindroid's customization guide describes editing the name and gender under General, the avatar under Avatar, and the text fields under Personality. The field previously called Backstory is now the Personality field.
You can separate the character's identity from how they reply: Personality for background, Response Directive for short instructions, and Example Message for tone, format, and approximate reply length. This is useful when you want to change the writing style without replacing the character's history.
The opening greeting is an exception to the settings layout: it becomes the first chat message, and there is no dedicated greeting field to edit later.

Keeping and correcting important details
More settings do not establish better recall. What matters here is which information you can inspect, reinforce, or correct.
Nomi: background notes and Mind Maps
Nomi's memory guide distinguishes short-, medium-, and long-term memory. It also warns that a detail can remain in memory without being retrieved at the right moment. A specific reminder can help more than a broad question about everything you discussed last month.
Backstory+ gives you places to reinforce context. Mind Maps show summaries and connections involving people, places, topics, and experiences.
If a Mind Map entry is wrong, the editing guide says you can correct it and lock it against automatic changes. Editing that entry does not rewrite or delete the underlying memories. You are correcting a summary or association, not editing every past conversation.
Kindroid: key facts, changing notes, and journals
Kindroid's memory guide separates several controls:
- Key Memories hold important facts you want available alongside the character's background.
- Learned Context contains editable notes about the relationship, important facts, and ongoing threads. It updates as you talk and can drop older items when its sections fill up.
- Journal entries hold information recalled through keyphrases in your own messages. An AI reply alone does not trigger that keyphrase match, and matching entries are subject to recall limits.
The memory guide says accounts with preview messages left receive Standard-tier memory, including Cascaded Memory and Learned Context. Continuing after the preview requires a trial or subscription. Check the plan access for the particular memory features you want on either service.
You can also open a Kindroid reply's Long term memory view to inspect the long-term memories and journals recalled for that reply. Deprioritize tells it to lean less on an unhelpful recalled memory; it is not a claim of complete deletion.
Explanatory diagram with fictional notes, not chat results or a memory-performance test.
For example, two adult friends who enjoy astronomy could have these separate notes:
Shared past: They visited the observatory together last autumn.
Current scene: They are planning tonight's stargazing.
This is a fictional setup example. In Nomi, the current scene belongs in Current Roleplay rather than being treated as permanent background. In Kindroid, an important shared event can be reinforced in Key Memories or a Journal entry, while changing plans may appear in Learned Context's ongoing threads. Review the actual notes rather than assuming they saved the event exactly as intended.
If a date is wrong, correct the relevant note and state the right date in the conversation. Neither editing a summary nor adding a key fact amounts to rewriting the whole chat history.
What happens after you stop paying
Cancelling renewal, reaching the end of a paid period, and deleting an account are different actions.
| After the paid period ends | Nomi | Kindroid |
|---|---|---|
| One-to-one messaging | Downgrading to free does not block one-to-one chats; free-plan limits apply | The account is read-only, so you cannot send or regenerate messages |
| Existing material | The current policy says existing content is not removed, but does not guarantee preservation after downgrade | The guide says existing chats, memories, media, and balances are kept; you can view, play back, export, and delete |
| Paid features | Group chats, video creation, voice messaging, and calls become read-only | Calls and proactive messages are unavailable in read-only mode |
See Nomi's downgrade policy and Kindroid's subscription guide for the current conditions. Keep a separate copy of material you want to retain rather than treating either policy as a permanent archive guarantee.
Nomi's cancellation policy says to cancel through the platform where you purchased the subscription, before renewal. Uninstalling the app does not cancel it. Benefits remain until the end of the current billing period.
For Kindroid, web subscriptions are managed under Profile > Billing; app-store purchases are managed through the purchase store. Ultra and MAX are separate monthly add-ons with dependencies on lower tiers. Cancel them separately if you no longer want their charges: letting Standard expire makes the account read-only even if an add-on remains active.
Which one to try first
Start with Nomi if your priority is returning for a small amount of free one-to-one conversation on different days. Decide on the name and starting traits before creation, then use background and scene notes to develop the conversation.
Consider Kindroid if you specifically want editable character fields, a separate reply-style example, and controls for inspecting or reinforcing remembered details. Use the one-time preview deliberately, and distinguish it from the payment-backed trial before subscribing.
Those recommendations concern access and controls, not a winner in emotional realism, English quality, or long-term recall. For either service, try a short scene whose facts you can check, inspect the available settings, and confirm the total recurring cost before committing.
If you are still choosing beyond these two services, the broader Character.AI alternatives comparison also covers public character chats and multi-character story roleplay.
