No. Character.AI says character creators cannot see your conversations with their Characters. That is the answer in its official creator-access FAQ.
It does not mean Character.AI itself never collects or uses chat content. It also does not cover a conversation you choose to post or send to someone else. To understand what is private, separate the creator's access, the service's data practices, and your own sharing.

Who can see or use your chats?
The character's creator
The creator-access FAQ says creators cannot see conversations you have with their Characters. Using a Character made by someone else does not give that creator a view of your chat history.
If you send the creator a screenshot yourself, they can see what you sent. That is different from access provided by the Character.
Character.AI and its service providers
Character.AI's Privacy Policy, effective July 1, 2026, lists chat communications among the content it collects. Section 2 includes model training, service improvement, security, and fraud prevention among its uses of information.
Section 3 also describes disclosures to employees, consultants, service providers, and vendors who need access to carry out work on its behalf. So the creator-access FAQ is not a promise that Character.AI staff can never access information.
These policy provisions do not establish that a person routinely reads every conversation. They describe permitted uses and disclosures, not a record of who has reviewed a particular chat.
People you share with
Posting a screenshot, copying a conversation into a public post, or sending it to a friend makes that content available to the audience you chose. Before sharing, check the whole image or text, including what appears outside the Character's reply.

Public, Unlisted, and Private characters
When you create a Character, its visibility setting controls who can access the Character, not whether your chat history is published.
The official Sharing and Community guide describes three options:
- Public: anyone can discover and chat with the Character. It can appear in search and discovery.
- Unlisted: people with the direct link can access the Character.
- Private: only you can see and chat with the Character.
Unlisted can be useful when sharing a Character for feedback, but it is not an invitation list restricted to named friends. Someone else who receives the link can access it too.

The guide says you can change visibility from the Character's settings page. Making a Character Private is not a model-training opt-out or a request to delete your data.
Model training settings and regional limits
Character.AI's model-training FAQ explains how to turn off Improve the Model for Everyone. Its instructions are specifically addressed to users in the European Economic Area (EEA) and the United Kingdom.
App instructions in the FAQ
- Log in and open Settings.
- Select Data & Privacy.
- Turn off Improve the Model for Everyone.
Web instructions in the FAQ
- Log in and open Settings.
- Select Account, then Manage Account & Data.
- Open Model Improvement.
- Turn off Improve the Model for Everyone.
According to the FAQ, after opting out, new content will not be used to train its generative AI models. It also says data may still be used to improve other parts of the service, including search, recommendations, and safety classifiers. This setting does not delete content you sent previously.
The Regional Privacy Disclosures, effective July 1, 2026, provide additional information for the United States, EEA, and UK. They describe an AI-training opt-out and link to the same FAQ. Read those disclosures alongside the FAQ's regional wording; do not assume the same switch appears for every account worldwide, or that its absence proves you have no privacy rights.
If you cannot find the setting or need to know which options apply where you live, use the official support request form or the privacy contact listed in the policy. The availability of a particular menu and your rights under local law are separate questions.
Opting out, deleting data, and sharing screenshots
Choose the action that matches what you want to change.
A training opt-out addresses the use of new content for generative AI training, as described in the FAQ. It is not a way to erase previous chats.
A data deletion request asks Character.AI to delete personal information. Section 4 of the Privacy Policy describes rights that depend on where you live and applicable law, with exceptions. Character.AI may need to verify your identity before responding to a request.
Account deletion is another action: the policy says you can delete your account through your profile page. Switching a Character to Private is not account deletion.
An explanatory diagram based on the official training FAQ and Privacy Policy. The regional label applies to the FAQ's instructions, not a claim that privacy rights exist only in those regions.
Deletion is not a promise of instant, complete erasure. Section 7 allows retention for purposes such as legal obligations, resolving disputes, and enforcing agreements. It also separately says Character.AI may preserve a Character made available to other users after its creator deletes their account. That provision concerns the Character; it should not be read as a statement that all of your chat history stays public.
If you want to keep a copy before requesting deletion, see the guide to exporting Character.AI chats. An exported file needs the same care as a screenshot when you store or share it.
What to check before you chat or share
The Privacy Policy asks users not to include sensitive personal information in their interactions with the service. You can make a role specific without using your legal name, address, school, or workplace. The Character.AI persona guide has fictional examples you can adapt.
Before posting a conversation, check for your display name, profile details, and personal information anywhere in the screenshot or copied text, including details about other people. If you only want to discuss one reply, share only the relevant part after reviewing what it reveals.
For a training setting you cannot find or a deletion request you want to make, follow the official privacy documents and support route for your region.
